What is 4130H Steel Tube? 1

I'm wondering if anyone can explain what 4130H would represent. I initially figured some heat treated condition, but found the Rockwell B-Scale hardness to be 98 of the material we received. Our supplier sent us 4130H tube (1-5/16 OD x .120 WT) in lieu of 4130 normalized that we ordered. The part to be produced from the suspect material will be welded into an assembly that is later heat treated to 175ksi. Thanks.

A very common general purpose grade of medium carbon, Cr-Mo steel. Flexibility afforded by heat treatment options allows it to attain a range of toughness and strength values. Good hardenability, strength, wear resistance, toughness, and ductility.

IRstuff - When I contacted the supplier I was told, "Perhaps it's a typo, in 20 yrs of doing business I have no idea what that is." So to answer your question, there's no good reason not to ask the supplier, that was the first person I asked - well, the first person after Google.

GBor - I've compared chemical composition to standard 4130 Cond N and it's a bit different. I guess I'm hoping someone might know and be able to explain the difference between 4130H and 4130 in terms of the benefit to one or the other for a given situation - IE as a designer when you would choose 4130H over a standard material 4130.
 
Sounds like you need to dump your supplier and start over, since it's a known AISI steel. How does he even know he's got the correct steel at all? Where are his material certifications?

Since he can't prove that he met the contractual requirements, there should be no obligation on your part to accept the material. You should return it and demand full restitution.

The more germane question is, "what are your requirements?" Does the new material meet them?

4130 is a chemical composition designation according to SAE J404 Chemical Compositions of SAE Alloy Steels. 4130H is a designation for composition and hardenability according to SAE J1268 HARDENABILITY BANDS FOR CARBON AND ALLOY H STEELS. You specify the H steels when you want to control hardenability.
