hello;

Please help me in finding the best basic and practical book for learning the piping!

The piping handbook, both Nayyar and King have books by that title.

Why not join a professional institution such as ASME, IMechE etc and get access to their virtual library? It will work out far more cost effective than buying books.

Process Plant Piping Books

There are a lot of books that address the subject of piping. Some books address HVAC and other building systems piping. Some address fire protection piping. There are still others that address hygienic piping. Finally, there are the books that address process plant piping. Process plants (in this context) are refineries, chemical plants, power plants, waste treatment plants, and others.
The books listed here are the piping books for process plants and are just a few of the total that may be available. These happen to be the ones I have in my library. I have used all of these during my career while both working and teaching.

Well LSThill you have done it again. Totally avoided answering the guy's question and performed a most excellent "cut and paste" of references. Maybe once you may answer the specific question asked!!!!

Mishov: It all depends at what level you are at. If you are a novice as regards engineering then as VPL suggests you need a grasp of engineering subjects before you move on. If you are a graduate in Mechanical Engineering and want an understanding then the two Piping Handbooks proposed above will suffice. If you want to become a Piping engineer then get yourself a job working under a competent Senior piping engineer-it's the best way to learn.

I note that Amazon are selling a reprint of Kelloggs The Piping andbook for about 16 bucks. I would start there. That should keep anyone busy for six months getting their head aornd that classic.

“The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.”
---B.B. King

Would have to agree with this one-

28. Flow of Fluid Through Valves Fitting and Pipe Crane Technical Paper 410

The challenge with learning the craft of a piping engineer is that you spend 50 years trying to get there and then you are told you too old to do your job. Given that 35% of the worlds energy is used moving fluids around in pipes I am amazed we arent paid a fortune to do it.

“The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.”
---B.B. King

stanier,
Agree with your sentiments entirely. Compared to your average Project Engineer/Manager a good Piping Engineer is very poorly paid by comparison. It just goes to show bullsh!t does baffle brains!!!!

I have to agree with DSB123's and stanier's replies from 11th of july.
Second, I'd like to add Peng & Peng's "Pipe Stress Engineering" book and Becht's 3rd edt of "Process Piping: The Complete Guide to ASME B31.3, Third Edition". The latter should, I think, be read first if you're pretty new to piping and B31.3. Peng's book is not that cheap as Kellogg's book but it is of the same value, and goes a bit more deep in terms of engineering analysis of piping systems. Well worth the 120 bucks on Amazon.

DBS123,

Depends if you slave away for a company or hire yourself out as a consultant. $/hr is the way to go so if they want you travelling and working away from home you can earn the cash. The project manager may save awy 70 hours a week and take work home but on $/hr basis you are quids a head. Amazing how many pipers are on contract.

what do you mean?
my post was referring to a different book, nothing to do with MKW (which should be MWK I think, which I assume is MW Kellogg).

can your (future) posts be a little bit more detailed?

Non degreed piping designers in oil and gas industry command salaries of $45-70 an hour. CADWORX, PDMS and other similar programs are used. Some good resources for this are:
