Just putting together a pros and cons list for the HVAC for an auditorium, and the two options I will present to the owner are PTACS in the windows (approximately 6 total), and the other being infrared heaters coupled a 90 ton air cooled chiller in a mechanical room adjacent the auditorium with operable windows that open based on space temperature due to the chiller condenser discharge air. Chilled water will be routed to various cooling coils on VAV terminal units.

Pros of option 1 include low coset
Cons include control difficulty

Pros of option 2 include complex system showing engineering bravado
cons include cost

thanks for your help.

You are comparing PTACS to a 90 ton air cooled chiller? Seems like a very big difference, especially in cost.

ASHRAE Systems? bible has a chapter (one of the first 5) that will help you put together a system comparison chart.

You may want to also consider a middle of the road option with a VRF system

Window mounted ACs are typically about a ton, so you're evaluating 6 tons vs. 90 tons; almost doesn't seem fair.

Additionally, they've got limited duct area, so they're quite noisy, and not what you'd want blowing into your ear during a lecture or sermon.
