HI

I am just new on construction and i don't have Engr to help me I am asking here if anyone knows the process for waterproofing membrane application?

the process so far ive known is

Slab
primer waterproofing coating
waterproofing membrane
and after this since I have to put the concrete topping on the membrane do I need to put reinforcing material above the membrane or does the topping concrete will stick on the membrane without the reinforcing material?

Thank you

If putting concrete over it, I would use a 1/2" protection board... Have to determine if you want your membrane mechannically fastened or adhered and the type of material... I swear by EPDM for most single ply applications.

Hi Dik,

Thank you for your reply. DO you have in mind what would be the best product that we could cover the membrane?

Thank you

Depending on the type of waterproofing membrane, one of the most important steps is surface preparation before the primer is applied. Make sure there is no dust or debris or moisture or other bond inhibiting materials on the surface, then follow the waterproofing manufacturers surface prep instructions.

Hi Canuck65,

Im using bostik torch membrane product, and my current surface is rough is this OK to directly apply the primer or should i prepare the surface to be smooth?

Thank you

For any application, you should be following the manufacturer's specifications on the use of the material. If this is on fresh concrete, there may be specific requirements (e.g., application cannot be applied for X days from the pour to allow the concrete to cure).

waterproofing membrane can be at least 100 things... i guess i wonder how you ended up on this one.... is someone else driving the ship and then they dumped it on you to design around it? in usa, the waterproofing usually is the design responsibility of the architect and sometimes they have an envelope consultant involved. waterproofing gets its own spec and the manufacturer will have people who will help prepare a spec to install their product to include in your contract documents. they will also review your details and give you feedback. the manufacturer of waterproofing has standard details. in general you want to stick to them and the instructions or they will have reason to explain why the warranty is invalid and you look like you're experimenting ideas out with someone else's property.
