HI All,

I'm trying to source an efficient gear that translates clockwise and ant-clockwise rotation in clockwise only torque on a shaft.

**Hoping to find a supplier that would have something like this on the shelf pre-engineered with known efficiency***

The pulley would oscillate X turns to the right, Y turns to the left, but would need to convert all of the energy into clockwise torque on a shaft.
X and Y would vary constantly. Goal is to turn an unstable oscillation into mechanical energy.

Similar to the attached drawing - I believe there is a name for this gear setup, but I can't remember.. doh! [evil] Can you guys help me out?

Thanks![afro2]

CDN_Eng_1982,

I am not aware of a gear setup like that. You are describing a mechanism, sort of like a Geneva mechanism. I think you have some engineering to do.

Here are soe ideas

^ This one would only work if the movement on the pulley was limited to 1 rotation

Where as, this one would seem to work better. The pulley could turn X^infinity in either direction and the power would always be converted to the same rotary torque

I am a big fan of Dr. Nguyen's work. Over 3200 working examples on his YouTube channel of interesting mechanisms.

That said, they are not typically available as packaged solutions. One needs to adapt and size the mechanism to the load and expected life.

Have you looked into One Way or Over Running clutches?

Yessir - I was on that today and came up with this idea:

I'm positive that this problem has been solved many times and many different ways and there is a name for one of them.

Hoping to find the right name for the gear so I can call up a supplier and get the specs rather than have it made from scratch

Thanks all for your help.

How about an in line reversing gearbox?

How about new idea for a grandfather clock pendulum drive mechanism?
