you mean the square housing?
I'd guess it has some control or monitoring stuff.
If you are really curious, hunt down some docs on the vehicle(?) and look for clues.
of course, if we knew what equipment this is part of, we might be able to venture a better guess.

I meant the round thing with a yellow sticker on it and a hose coming out of it. The other image has the hose bolted to the motor flange. Not sure if that is a motor or a gearbox device.

It attaches with a banjo fitting so it's definitely a fluid connection. My first guess was some type of hydraulic shaft brake but those are usually in a separate housing on the NDE of the motor.
 
I would have guessed that it's either a vent or oil return.
