I have a part with a .125 diameter hole which breaks through and area it shouldn't. I need to do a weld repair on it and my customer needs a spec it will be done to. Any suggestions?

Yes. First, you need to determine or know the chemical composition of the aluminum alloy part. Once this information is known, you can select an appropriate filler metal for welding.

Second, I would locally grind into the pin-hole (or surface pore) to evaluate the soundness of the aluminum in the area you intend to weld. Have some liquid penetrant handy to check the surface of the part after you have removed the pore. It could be that as you grind into the part to remove the pin hole, there is a large void or other defects.

Third, I would suggest you review the information below, especially if you have never welded with aluminum.

Actually, I am not doing the welding, we have a welder who does work for us and my customer is requesting a spec he is certified to. I am trying to find the any specification which applies to weld repair. The material is 6061-t6

Welder qualification requirements are based on the applicable design Code or Engineering requirements governing the work. An example would be ASME Section IX.

If it is structural, AWS D1.2 will work although you will need a WPS. What does your welder normally weld to and what is he certified under? What is the application?

Keep in mind that the heat effect zone is going to be MUCH weaker than the base metal.
I can't rember off hand if the T6 is from heat treat or from work hardening. You need to check that out if this is a critcal part.
