Dear all,
i had etched a piece of annealed stainless steel 440C material with 10% Oxalic acid, however I can't identify any traces of martensitic structure. In addition, are the white islands carbide?

I had attached a photomicrograph taken at 500X for viewing.

Thanks!

How are you expecting martensitic structure in an annealed condition? martensitic structure is a quenched annealed structure for as I know.

The annealed 440C microstructure consists of round globules, which are carbides, in a ferrite matrix. This is typical for fully annealed material. There should be no martensitic structure.

Typically annealed microstructure. Why were you expecting any martensite in them?
