If a steel spring (1080) comes in contact with 2024 aluminum will galvanic corrosion initiate (clean environment)? Would a zinc plating help minimize the risk.

Galvanic corrosion can occur if the two metals are in contact and an electrolyte is present. Mechanical zinc plating (not electroplating, due to the high hardness of the spring steel and the resulting embrittlement) would be one solution. An organic coating such as those supplied by Magni, D[ö]rken, or Metal Coatings would be better.

yes and yes. of course 1080 in the Q&T condition is quite rust prone. and zinc coatings really tend to not be the most sucessfull way to protect parts in this environment. i would use a plastic to completely isolate the two materials. you need to prevent conductive contact between steels and aluminium.

This assembly is used in an aerospace application.
