What would an acceptable deflection value be for a temp. sheet pile retaining a paved road

Hi ,

Am designing a temp sheet pile meant to retain a paved road, and its only temporary, but what deflection value is usually the cutoff line, I believe that there no standard for this value but am asking based on your experience.

If there are services in the ground near the wall that could be damaged by movement then I would be aiming for about 10mm. If not then 20-30mm might be more appropriate.

Could be several inches or could be 0.5 inch. It all depends what is located in the active zone, as has been pointed out underground utilities are common and don't like movement, and the tolerance of the owner to damage. May be cheaper to allow some movement and then repave; may have to repave anyway.

UP/BNSF has a document you might find helpful.

Their deflection limits are a half inch max. Pretty stringent!
