Where to buy COLD DRAWN SEAMLESS STEEL TUBING (NOT DOM)? 1

Hi!

I´m trying to find a COLD DRAWN SEAMLESS STEEL TUBING for 2-7/8" O.D. 3/16" wall but no success. The USA suppliers that I have found, have just offered me the same size of tubing in DOM (DRAWN OVER MANDREL).

Can you give me a list of USA suppliers where I can get the CD SEAMLESS STEEL TUBING?

DOM is being offered because in this size (relatively thin wall) it has become standard due to better dimensions.
As far as mechanical properties and performance there will be no difference between CDsmls and welded and cold drawn.
We can make this size as seamless cold drawn at Plymouth Tube in Winimac IN, and I know that we have a couple of domestic competitors that can do it also (MI Seamless for one).
What alloy are you looking for?

Hi EdStainless,

According to drawing, it does not mention any particular composition. If the tubing meets standard carbon steel is OK. It is required just 2 items of 21ft more or less .

Simply ask the customer or whatever if DOM is acceptable..
No one is getting out of bed for the little quantity you want..

My first move would be to request approval to use DOM.

Specifying cold drawn tube without specifying a grade or alloy is cart before horse. Why specify an expensive, hard to source material without knowing what properties you're actually getting?

We see it all of the time. This comes usually from people using designs that they have no insight into. So they slavishly follow what they have whether it makes sense or not.
The only place where seamless is superior is at elevated temps, the varying grain size in welded results in variable creep properties.
For most mech application it doesn't matter.

There is not much difference between the mechanical properties of ASTM-A-513(DOM) and ASTM-A-519(CDS).
