Which book about threaded fasteners?

I'd like to know more about fastener design and calculation,
and have seen the Bickford books are favorable.
I tried to order one some time ago, however it was out of stock back then, so will try again now...


But: which one to get, if you would have to choose?

An introduction to the design and behavior of bolted joints by Bickford
or: Handbook of Bolts and bolted joints by Bickford and Nassar
or: What every engineer should know about threaded fasteners by Alexander Blake

Both Bickford books are worth getting, but for a single book, I would go with the Handbook. Blake's book is not worthy of consideration. Take a look at this: faq725-600

I'd check out the "Machinist's Handbook" and this website:

I've already bought a copy of the Machinist's handbook, but would like more detailed info about the calculation of bolted joints.

So, my question would be, based on the already received info:

If you would have to choose, and could only have one, which one would it be?

I am not familiar with the books you mentioned but I've downloaded two free pd e-books.

Fastener Design Manual - NASA:

The second one is a nice reference to bolts and nuts.

I agree with CoryPad (I own all these titles)

1 - Don't bother with "What every engineer should know about threaded fasteners"
2a - The Bickford books you can't go wrong with - they are exceptional and cover all aspects
2b - "Bolted Joint Engineering" by Tomotsugu Sakai is a very good book as well. Not as large (only 270 pages) compared to Bickford's 500-950 pages depending on exact edition and title. But "Bolted Joint Engineering" is quite technical and does not have the "fluff" as Blake's verbiage heavy/theory absent title.

I forget to mention

3 - VDI 2230 Systematic Calculation of High Duty Bolted Joints - Joints with one cylindrical bolt is an exceptional reference as well. However, it is pricey ~240 Euros. If you are spending your own money, for that price I would recommend buying 1 Bickford + 1 Sakai (note - I also own VDI 2230) Or if you have the money / can get work to pay for it - I highly recommend VDI 2230.

I agree with CoryPad and Canadieng-- Bickford's Handbook is the best place to start. Sakai's book is also quite good, as is VDI2230. If you really want to understand the calculation aspects, get your company to pay for VDI2230.
