I am currently looking for database software that can hold a large amount of data (PO Info, customer info, invoicing info, etc.). We are debating between purchasing something like Great Plains (now owned by Microsoft) or having a consulting firm create a database for us. Does anyone recommend either? Based on price, ease of use, and time efficiency?

Difficult question, which software is the best.

I think there are enough software companies which deal with PO's invoices etc. There also some good books about the subject.

Start thinking in terms of client-server environment, do not waste your time with small stuff like acces.

The first thing to do is analyze your work processes. What is your core bussiness.

Do you need purchasing for maintaining an industry, or are you supplying goods?

In case one, you have computerized maintenance management systems with inventory control, purchasing, asset registration, cost accounting etc.

Any software you purchase or develop must match with the way you operate your bussiness, to many failures occurs because someone buys a marvellous software which is not suited for your operations, and you have to adapt your way of operating to that with all the related problems.

Hope this helpes

We are a manufacturing company, small in size (by employee numbers), but large in scope (business wise). Where's the best place/who are the best people to check with? Books? Magazines? :) Thanks

Anything out there will work. Of I prefer Oracle, Postgre or MySQL.
The two best above are of course Oracle and Postgre. Postgre is free and almost as good as Oracle. MySQL gives you glorified tables but lacks a lot.

Without a better description of the data and queries that the DB is for I cannot be of more help.

Dear LD,
I would suggest going only for customised databases rather than pre-prepared ones. By customising it,you will also be able ot make your DB far more flexible, allowing for any kind of future procedural changes in your company.
Further, when you ask for any kind of s/w suggestions, especially recommendattions as you have now, it would be better if you could quantify the size of data et cetera, so you can recieve better information and you would be able to take a good decision fast.
If I can be of further help, let me know.
