I always wondered why? is it that hard to program? or is it largely a case of pricing set at what large companies are just still willing to pay for their licenses?

I know some software is very expensive, because it includes substantial amounts of consulting from the cfd company to the customer who bought their cfd package. Is that usually included in the 50 to 80K price range?

Invariably, products like this are niche products, and they are invariably in the continuous product improvement cycle, which means that they have to feed a bunch of programmers and physicists to continually improve their product. Secondly, because this is not a commodity product and requires massive amounts of product support, they have to feed a bunch of support people, as well as a bunch of marketing people to keep the product sold. As a general rule, product support is a separate function and charge and typically is something like 10% of the price of the product, annually. But with that maintenance contract comes product updates and technical support.
