Why torch-on membrane?

I was advised by a plumber that I should apply torch-on membrane to my rooftop because it's the kind that lasts for many years. I am not quite convinced with the suggestion but I am considering it. Can anyone give me some quick ideas on why should I go for torch on membrane for my rooftop? I will really appreciate it!

A torch on membrane process ensures a more durable bonding between membranes, giving a lasting application.

I agree with the plumber who told you that. It has been a top waterproofing choice to many due to its impressive qualities such as flexibility and resistance to cracks. Also, highly mechanised modified bitumens, commonly used for road construction, are complemented in torch on membranes.

The roofing materials are heated and mixed in a hopper to temp and sprayed to the substrate. A good PRM roof on a concrete substrate will last until we're both dead.

there is a lot of information about the design of the existing roof (especially the substrate), condition of the existing roof and structure, cost, availability of contractors skilled with this roof, desired (or code required) total R-Value, location of dew point concerns, desired life-cycle, foot traffic, roof equipment...... that goes into selecting the most appropriate roof. It may be worth it to you to consult with a local Registered Roofing Consultant (RRC), a local engineering firm that specializes in envelope services, or a local architect to sort it out....

unless it is leaking... before you engage, i would start looking at the product lit from the manufacturers to get a familiarity with what's out there. If your roof works well within the manufacturer recommended details they publish, that is a good start. roofing manufacturers have tech sales reps that should be very knowledgeable although biased to their product.

What type of rooftop? Is it flat? Low slope? High slope?
Agree with DSG2's advice. There are reasons to use a torch-applied modified bitumen membrane and also reasons not to use same!

Would you accept plumbing advice from a roofer?

I don't know where the OP is, but it depends on where you are as to the definition of roofer and plumber. In Australia, the tradesmen who do roofing work are called roofing plumbers. Anything to do with repelling water or carrying it...you are a plumber. I know, some things in Oz are strange, but they say the same thing about the US.
