PTC has always made backwards compatibility an impossibility. It makes sense if you consider that new features would have to be "suppressed" when using an earlier version of ProE.

You make it sound like they're alone in that respect. Actually, I'm a little curious about PTC's cross release compatibility scheme (never having seen it first hand). Consider the scenario ...
_ I'm using WF2 and recieve a WF3 part file.
_ It's my understanding that if I have obtained the necessary .dll(s) I can open the WF3 .prt file.
_ I can see (?) the existing feature tree but cannot edit existing features.
_ I can add features to the model.
_ I can send the file back, they can merge my features (or simply open?) and they have a part that is still fully parametric and editable, will lose no references, etc.?
