Police departments are experimenting with a way to track vehicles which they would have otherwise probably pursued, resulting a dangerous police chase:

Redmond police test deployable GPS trackers to de-escalate car chases

An excerpt from the above item:

As the fate of Washington's controversial law restricting police pursuit laws is decided in the state legislature, Redmond police are now testing a new tool that would allow them to remotely track vehicles that flee from officers.

The department is now using the 'StarChase' system on some patrol cars which will allow officers to deploy a remote tag that can then allow dispatchers to remotely track the vehicles' location.

“The early data shows it is a viable tool for us to use," Redmond Police Chief Darrell Lowe told KOMO News.

The GPS tag is launched from an officer's patrol car and sticks to the back of a fleeing car. The company claims to have an 85% apprehension rate with the StarChase system.

Of course, this means that TV viewers in Southern California will have to find something else to watch most weekday afternoons ;-)
