Hello,

I have the ASCE 7-10 but could not find an answer to my question.

Do you need to consider the ENTIRE building when coming up with the load calcs?

For instance, a hip roof home with flat roof over open patio in the back.

for roof calcs on the flat roof, the average height of the BUILDING is needed, correct? Not just the height of the flat roof? Also, do I need the dimensions of the ENTIRE building?

I've been always considering the entire building, but i've seen some jobs where they just use the flat portion

thanks

It all depends on the calculation you're doing. But in your case, to be conservative, use the average height of the hip roof. It can't be a huge difference and maybe some reviewer would see it different if you just picked the flat roof height.

And, yes, you will need the overall building plan dimensions too to determine the "a" value for the corner pressures.
