ICC (2003) Section 1609.2 - Definition for EFFECTIVE WIND AREA is nearly the same as the definition in the ASCE-7-02 - Section 6.2 except for the ICC refers to the Tables 1909.6.2.1(2) and 1609.6.2.1(3) where the ASCE-7-02 refers to Figures 6-11 through 6-17. Both refer to the product GCp. The ASCE-7-02 seems to apply this definition to Method 2. I am assuming this is not applied to method 1 (simplified method)
The author of a study guide I believe is misinterpreting this definition. He is applying it to the Cladding and Components section of method 1 as insinuated by the definition in the ICC. Since GCp in both codes refer to ASCE 7-02 (Figure 6-5 - Method 2) I am assuming the definition in the ICC also refers to Method 2 (Rigorous Analysis)
The bottom line - do I compare the wind area width (minimum of 10% of least span or 40% height but not less then 3' or 4% of least span) to 1/3 the height of the building? Refer to Figures 1609.6.2.1 and Figure 1609.6.2.1 (ICC 2003) or Figures 6-2 and 6-3 (ASCE 7-02)
