Hope soneone can help me out regarding this matter. Current;y, I am involved in a marine project in designing an evacuation door for marine vessels, but I am rather confused by the wind loading calculations for the door (supposedly different from normal structural wind loading calculations). Could anyone tell me how to calculate the wind loading? The max wind velocity is given as 30m/s. The door surface area is 12m squared. Thanks!

my experience with wind load calculation on ships, is that they are not really important, with this I mean that any calculation of stress due to wind is overly overdimensined, usually a wave crashing on the deck, has many times the force of any wind that the ship is going to experience, therefore, to calculate the stress due to wind, you usually just check that it is overdimensioned.
Another calculation, this one a little more detailed, is to calculate the wind resistance of a ship, forward and sideways, if this is your problem, check out any Naval architeture textbook, but once again, the wind resistance is small compared to the water friction, therefore, don´t expect to find any super accurate results.

For example a deck hatch on a containership, weights many tons, and has to stand a wave of several tens of tons crashing on it, it could be funny that just wind can do any harm and therefore, is not worth to calculate it.

Hope this helps any.

Normal Force = 1/2*(rho)(A)(CD)V^2
= 1/2*(rho)(12)CD(30^2)

rho = air density
CD = value of shape

Thanks jabonet and vtl, the information has been a great help. Though the exact calculations has't been accounted for but u did give a new perspective on the stresses acting on the doors from waves crashing...

cheers,
