Wingwall layout and orientation

Is there a quick method for setting the orientation and length for splayed wingwalls on cantilever or stub abutments?

I've always been taught to draw the proposed grading contours and to lay the wingwalls out using that method. However, this is time consuming for preliminary design. Are there any shortcuts or rules-of-thumb out there?

Thanks!
Tom

Our DOT doesn't have any. I've checked the design guides to several other DOT's as well with no luck.

Thanks for the link. I have seen that reference and refer to it frequently. However, it doesn't gives any definitive guidance on how to select wingwall orientation (the angle at which the wall flares back from the abutment seat).

On non-skewed bridges with equal rates of embankment slope in front of the abutment and along the roadway 45 degrees yields a pretty efficient wingwall layout. However, what about cases where the bridge is on a large skew, is located along a horizontal curve, or the rates of embankment sideslope are not equal? Is it that the old standby of developing contours is really the only reliable method of developing the wingwall orientation and layout.

I've seen (90 degrees +/- skew angle)/2. This should get you pretty close. Never seen one for differing front and side slopes. Your method of laying out contours will always work, though.
