I'm looking for validation on this point or a positive proof to negate my approach please. If I have a welder qualified to GTAW (TIG) carbon steel only without backing (gas or plate) and he utilizes F6 GTAW to obtain a fillet weld, could I use the same welder to obtain a Stainless Steel fillet weld utilizing GTAW F6... considering both are achieved without backing?

Have you reviewed the essential variables in QW-356 for GTAW welding for performance qualification? Per QW-356, for GTAW welding, only deletion of backing is an essential variable. A welder qualified without backing can weld with backing (such as fillet welds) provided all other essential variables are met. Changing F number of the filler metal is also an essential variable, so when qualified to use F6 filler metal, using any F6 is qualified as long as other essential variables are met.
