So I was at a job site visit the other day, and when reviewing the photos I took, I noticed that some of the Tapcons used to install wood straps (Simpson straps and buckets) had countersink heads (Phillips flat head), instead of standard hex heads. I don't know overall how many are affected. My thought on this is if there is tension on the anchor, it would be easier for the screw head to pull through the strap, rather than the standard hex head, which has a bit of the washer flange as well as the hex head. But in shear, they should probably give out the same capacity. But since it is unlikely that the real loading is pure shear, and that some prying is likely, it is probably not as good.
What do you guys think? I have not yet asked Simpson for their opinion, which I am going to do.
Thanks.
