Is this a nutty idea?

I'm imagining angle clips on either end of the steel beam. Or perhaps a plate at the end of the steel beam with thru bolts into the wood LVL.

Steel is carrying relatively light loads but the span is a bit long.

Yeah I'd say a double angle shear connection with either lag screws or through bolts. But keep in mind the eccentricity this applies to the beam torquing it around.

Do you need erection tolerance at the connection in question or can that happen at the other end? I lean towards an end plate or a recessed, inverted seat angle over the top of the wood beam with a couple of screws in from the top.

Koot,

the other end can accept tolerance. I like the idea of using a custom top flange hanger over the LVL. This might win me over using thru bolts and swiss cheesing the lvl to accommodate the reaction.

Yeah, Not sure where my head was at yesterday. Top flange hanger is the way to go. If you make the top part long and thick enough, you would minimize my eccentric loading concerns.
