I recently got a set of plans that called for trusses that are a bit over 14' tall. That's normally not a big issue, as we can piggyback them.

Most truss manufacturers that I know of have tables that are 14' wide. But you can't build a truss that tall, as you have to have jigging blocks above and below the truss. I try to keep the height of trusses to 13'2" for that reason. But we do push the limits a bit on occasion.

I thought some of you might be interested in knowing just on general principals.

Would not transport requirements control?

The plant I work at can easily and inexpensively get 90 day permits for loads up to 14' wide. (Illinois) So in our case manufacturing is what defines the limit.

That may be different in other states.

Hokie, we use a piggyback truss in many cases to deal with the shipping problem. We have done many bldgs with 60'-80' spans.

Brad... That's how we've done them. If only a few and not so tall they can shipped on an angle to reduce the height of load.

Some of the truss suppliers use a stretch trailer system, with a sliding center beam, to adjust the trailer length. Half the truss load is on each side of the center beam, and the trusses are upside down on the trailer, with the truss top chords sitting on sloped saddles at each end of the trailer. Thus, the top chord of Brad805's hip truss (now on the bottom), can be only a foot or so above the pavement. And, they can still meet a 15' vert. clearance.

Thanks, Ron. Good information to have handy. Keep the truss knowledge coming.
