I am about to get my professional engineering license very soon in two months. My employer usually accepts design-build projects. Now he wants me to work as a professional engineer for him.

My question is: Do I need to have any contract (obviously for my benefit) with my employer related to professional engineering work which I perform for him? Thank you in advance.

You might specify the country/region you are in as the local laws dealing with professional engineering liability and employee-employer relationships varies greatly.

In that case your company likely already has a set of insurance policies in place. Prior to using your own seal for design documents, you should ensure with your company that their policy allows you to be covered as an employee. As an employee, covered under your company's professional liability insurance policy, there should be no need for another contract. Unless, of course, you wish to make changes to your employment terms given your, I suppose, promotion?

While you may be getting your P.E. license soon, you do not say how much time you spent working under a registered engineer, and how long you’ve been working as an EIT, and doing real engineering on significant projects. Do you have the experience and overall engineering knowledge to act as the EOR on your various projects. Just because you got your P.E. doesn’t necessarily mean you are ready to act the EOR on any or all projects. Are you working for your company as an employee or as an outside independent contractor? You should have insurance coving your work, one way or another.
