What affect does rolling normalized 516-70 plate have on the grain structure. Will this practice defeat the purpose of normalization.

The case in point is rolling 1" thick plate to an ID of 36" to create a wear pad for a pipe (AKA pipe saddles or repads). The finished wear pad would have an arc of 120 degrees and a length of about 18".

If rolling is acceptable would we want to roll the wear pad in the same direction as the plate was rolled?

From a chemical composition point of view is 516-70 a good match for 36" x 1" Wall API-5L-B pipe.

In boiler and pressure vessel applications, you can cold work (form below the re-crystallization temperature) with up to 40% fiber elongation with no requirement for a stress relief thermal treatment (above 900 deg F). In other words, the roll formed plate can be used in service as is.

The grain structure will be altered because of the forming operation (cold working to roll form the plate). However, this effect will not result in lower mechanical properties. The cold forming will affect toughness, which in this case would require a re-normalization heat treatment. You need to determine if low temperature service is a requirement for this formed plate.
