Hello, all;
I'm looking for the definitive answer for which metals can be welded in the following case. A welder passes a SMAW-GTAW test on P-1 to P-1. The range qualified shows up as P1-P11,P34, P4x on the QW483 form.

I have several people who think this test qualifies the welder to weld inconel which is P-43. I disagree with their statement, since the P number is an essential variable in IX. There is some confusion due to the range mentioned above. It seems to me a separate test is required for inconel / Hastelloy, etc.

What say you all?

Your interpretation is not quit correct. P1 to P1 also qualifies P41 through P49. See par QW-423.1.
It will however also depend on the F number of the rod used for qualification.
A welder qualification made on P1 to P1 welded with CS filler (e.g. F4) would in theory be qualified for welding Inconel with a CS weld rod , which is of couse non-sence.
A welder qualification made on P1 to P1 using F45 filler would however be qualified to weld inconel with F45 rods.

The essential variables for welder qualification can be found in QW-350. As ijzer says, in your case, F# will be the limiting variable. This rule allows a fabricator to qualify a welder using an Inconel or Hastelloy filler, on carbon steel base metal, saving cost and trouble.

Okay, I understand. The F number is the limiting variable. The P1-P11, P34, P4x confuses the issue when just speaking of P numbers.

I explained it badly in my original post. What I was disagreeing with is inconel being welded by a welder who didn't take an Inconel test, F43, just a test using F6 / F4 welding material.

Thank you both for your helpful posts, I appreciate it.
