Hi can anyone advise on the following to code AWS D1.1. There have been project WPQR run and approved. I have been handed copies of the approved WPS which cover unlimited thickness & have been run in 3G Vertical up position.
Do these cover overhead & down hand positions?

Yes, if the WPS states that.

Basic misconception - the PQR / WPS is to prove that filler metal "A" will successfully weld base metal "B" togather. Period. It has nothing to do with testing a welder's skill. Just that successful welds can be made using the material(s) and essential variables specified.

The welder qual - WPQ - is the skill test. For skill, a 3G [vert] weld will only qualify for 1G, 2G, and 3G. Uphill welding qualifies for uphill only. Downhand for downhand only. Overhead welding requires more, and different, skill. Thus the only way a welder can get certified for 4G [overhead] is to weld a 4G coupon.

VERY common error to confuse WPS requirements with WPQ requirements.

I believe this is covered in AWS D1.1 Section 4.4 and Table 4.1 "WPS Qualification - Production Welding Positions Qualified by Plate, Pipe and Box Tube Tests".

AWS is more restrictive with regards to the production positions qualified. The short answer is that each position requires a separate supporting PQR. The exception is the flat position.

Al is correct.
Table 4.1 states a 3G WPS is valid for Vertical welding only,

Sorry,
That should read " A 3G PQR is only valid for production welding in the vertical position"

I 'stand' [sit?] corrected. Learning has occurred.
