According to the Farm Code all is fair until you get caught.

By the way, you should be able to find it with a Google search and download a copy. I think it is about the only welding standard available on line for free. Here's a link:

You are asking us to provide you with a basic education in welding engineering.

gtaw,

I could not find anything at that link. But you're right, it was free. Except for the 12 seconds of my life I can never get back.

I just tried the link as printed above and it took right to the FC2002. I cut the link and entered it in a search and presto - I was there.

My apologies IM, it's funnier after a couple of beers.

Al,
I tried the link and it didn't work.
However, I have reviewed the Farm Code previously and couldn't find anything related to unqualified / inexperienced personnel being responsible for welding operations.
I agree, everything is funnier after a couple of beers - apart from your bosses opinion when you are deep in the brown stuff !! LOL !
Cheers,
Shane

Here is a link I found in the "DuraMax Diesel" website:

I'm not sure why the other link didn't work. Both the other link and this link worked for me. I did a Google search using "Farm Code Welding". I have a few pages to look through, but it is still out there in the electronic mist.

The term 'Farm Code' is just too intriguing for me to give up easily. I sense significant entertainment potential there.

The real Farm Code that I refer to here is a spoof of AWS D1.1 comprising all the stupid things you hear and see on the shop floor.

When AWS D1.1 changed their code to allow one to weld on surface contaminated with "residual" oil, grease, water, etc., I started to refer to their code as the Farm Code. A few of the committee members took offence and complained of my hyraces. You know how it is, some people have no sense of humor.

I'm enjoying a flashback to my uncle's drive shed, with dirt floor, a Cockshutt 30hp tractor and tubes of grease everywhere.
I recall some homemade equipment repairs, but never any welding.

@ IM, see annex.
Mine possibly isn't the latest version, had to dig it up from waaay back in my archives...

That's the latest revision.

Gents,
take more beers but please reply to my question.

That is a code specific question.

I think IM has summarized it quite well.
You don't even mention what standard you work to. I bet whatever standard it may be, it has a table of diameters with their range of qualification.

kingnero wps is qualified according to asme sec-IX and i am working on storage tanks API 653.
i am not getting any reference in this regard.
actually i have have already a wps qualified for 2" but i have a 1/2" pipe to weld so my question is shall i use the same wps for 1/2" pipe or i need a new wps to be qualify.

Nice...thanks kingnero.

Turns out I've been working in accordance with Code all along without knowing it ;-)

I mostly work with euro codes, sometimes asme ix but never the calculation codes or API, so there may be other provisions, but as far as I'm aware pipe diameter is not an essential variable for procedure qualification. Up to you to decide if the WPS is suitable for a 1/2" pipe. If you can't make this decision, ask a welder.

@ IM, my pleasure. The document could use an update, I'm sure if we all combine our experiences we'd have a 2020 draft by next week...

You may not have to requalify based on pipe diameter, but you may have to based on wall thickness. What is the minimum wall thickness of the pipe you want to weld and what is the minimum wall thickness listed by the WPS?
