Dear all,

We have a Sec IX qualified WPS for Sour service with impact & PWHT, I wonder can we use the Same for line which is non Sour and dosent require PWHT(Thickness-19mm).

Kindly clarify,

Thanks & Regards

Per Sec IX rules, an impact tested PQR will support an non impact tested WPS, however, PWHT is an essential variable. You can't generate a non PWHT'd WPS supported by a PQR that received PWHT.

Thanks for Your reqlay. It means we cant use ie PWHT'd PQR to support non PWHT WPS.

Again Instead of qualifying a new procedure is it allowed as per codes to do the PWHT for line which is not havin any requirement as per the calss.

Pipe Class# API 5L, 60" X 19.05 Thick
Design Code# B31.3, Sea Water Service

Thanks & regards

You can always PWHT the welds in the line using your WPS qualified with PWHT.

Why would you want to do so? Qualifying a procedure without PWHT is economicaly beneficial to you in the long term.

Don't look at a WPS as a project cost; they are Capital. One PQR can generate multiple WPS's [within the limits of Essential Variables], and each WPS lasts the lifetime of your company. This makes WPS's a more durable Capital Expense than your corporate building.
