I am fairly new to the qc world although I have been welding for the last 17 years. The paper work sometimes gets to me.

My question is I have a welder that is qualified on 2" xs GTAW all the way out. He also is qualified on 2" xs SMAW 6010 root/ 7018 fill and cap. Does this qualify him to weld a joint that calls for GTAW root/ 7018 fill and cap?

What specification are you working to? In general, I think he should be qualified, since he has qualified for both the processes involved, GTAW amd SMAW. The welding standard or special customer requirements could change that. Weld procedure would probably be a different situation.

You follow the guidelines for multi-weld process WPS qualification in ASME Section IX.

Yes, but within the limits of the deposited weld metal thicknesses per ASME IX.

Ok thanks, I thought this would be the case but I didnt want to get in a bind. Stanweld thanks for your input also I did look at the max. thickness qualificaton on the 2nd wps when I first started and it was within the range I needed. I usually do all the searching I can before I ask a question but I have got swampped with hiring and testing welders for a turnaround I'm starting. I appreciate all the info for sure
