Hi all

Got a weird problem. The company has recently upgraded from NX6 to NX7.5, and when I booted up the PC this morning and started NX an error box popped up saying something about environment variables license server to be configured properly.

I rang the support and they took over my pc remotely, but they are still scratching their heads. We got it to work once, then we restarted the pc and up popped that error box again!

Since then we've been trying to get the thing to work. We've uninstalled/reinstalled NX twice, uninstalled/reinstalled the license thing many times but the darn thing still gives an error box.

Has anyone had this problem and solved it?

Any help would be great.

thanks

need the log files from the license service & from NX to solve this one.

In my experience uninstalling & reinstalling does more harm than good especially when it's the license service.

Are you running VPN on your system? I've had problem recently with my NX license server and it has only started since NX 7.5, which did require you to reinstall the license server software as there were changes (not so much with the Siemens' side but from the licencing software vendor). If I have a VPN session running, even if I launched NX before establishing the VPN link, and VPN goes down, either due to network problems or because I explicitly disconnected, within a few minutes, the NX license server fails and I have to restart NX to get it running correctly again.

Note that I've brought to to the attention of the people responsible for the NX implementation of the license server software and they are checking this with the licensing tools vendor, but so far I've heard nothing back from them.

And to be clear, I'm talking about my laptop where I've installed a local license server so there's no need to use the network to connect to a remote server. However, it appears that when VPN goes down, that the server is somehow thinking that something has happened. If I don't ever launch VPN I have not problems. Here in the office I don't need VPN as I'm already inside the company firewall and I never had a license failure. However, when I'm working from home, which is virtually everyday, early in the morning and late at night as well as weekends, and when I'm on the road, connecting from hotels and other places, I need to use VPN to gain access to our corporate network and access files and servers from inside our firewall. So when I am running VPN and NX simultaneously, I have to make sure that VPN stays up and if if does go-down for whatever reason, I have remember to quickly save any NX work I can't afford to lose and to immediately restart VPN in the hopes that the server hasn't yet noticed the 'problem' (if I don't wait too long, not over 5 or 6 minutes, I can usually get logged back-in quickly enough so as to keep NX running).

Hi John,

This morning I booted up the pc and started NX at the earliest possible moment (the pc was still in the boot up phase), and NX started without any problems. I didn't shut down NX all day just to be on the safe side.

We think we found the problem though. It seems that there maybe a conflict between the Solidworks licensing and NX licensing. We think the reason NX started is because I started up NX asap, and Solidworks was still be fully activated in the system processes (in the Task manager). The investigation continues.

I use VPN when I'm working from home. Our support providers use it as well when they needed to take a look at our system. We haven't found any conflicts with VPN as yet.

If we have anymore problems we have decided that we are going to reinstall NX6, then figure out the problem with NX7.5 licensing, or just wait for NX8 to be released.

But I must say when NX7.5 is working it is a fantastic piece of software.

The problem with VPN only occurs when the VPN process goes-down. If it stays up, I've never experienced any issues. Also note that other variable in this is that this has only started since I installed NX 7.5 and since I've moved to Windows 7, so there are several possible variable that may be a play here. Anyway, if it continues, please contact GTAC as we do have someone looking at what issues have been reported with the new NX 7.5 license software so your input could be useful as well.
