I am thinking about purchasing Inventor but i have a question. a company that I do some engineering work for, uses autocad 2009 as their 3d package and drafting. They just started making the solid models xrefs. Can I model in Inventor and save them as acad2009 xrefs for submittal to them. Thanks

Never mind I guess all that an x-ref is in acad is an external acad file. so as long as the inventor models can be saved as a 2009 or prior, then i shouldnt have no problem.

Thanks, since I havent used Inventor, the question is inventor solids can be exported with a .DWG extension and they can be used in Autocad 2009 corrrect?

You can save the files in dwg directl from Inventor to whatever dwg format you need.

AEC Exchange > Save as DWG Solids

You can also Save Copy As ACIS (*.sat) which AutoCAD will open using the acisin command.

You are correct in that xref is simply one dwg referrenced in another dwg file.
