Zero carbon air travel by 2050... or not

California hit 56.7°C in 1911.

Yup... and it could be reached in 2022, 2023, 2024, etc. and not one in a hundred years. I have no idea of where this will go, but looking at the Mead Reservoir and surrounding waterways, it isn't looking particularly good. I think they have another 45' before there is no more Hydro... let alone irrigation. There's a big milestone coming up in a month or so regarding water usage... that will be interesting to see how that works out... In a Chinese sense, these are interesting times... (not really the 'classic' Chinese curse, but people understand it as such, and I'm not racist in any fashion).

It's been 111 years since the last record. What pattern do you see that makes you think it's going to repeat 3 years in a row starting this year?

It's on it's way... just a matter of waiting to see how hot it gets. It might not happen until 2030... but the stage is set...

If you look at the data... a lot of the daily records have been broken in the last couple of decades. It's just a sign of the times.

What is the location of those July temperatures?

They mentioned the location, it was the same spot, and was well known. Sorry I forgot to note it... I'll see if I can locate the site. For the last few decades, the US south-west has been in a terrible situation with heat and drought, promoting fires, and power outages.

The new records appear to be happening at intervals less than 22 years... [ponder]

It happens FOR intervals of 22 years...

Concur... cut the races and 1000 people will not be 'jetsetting' to see them. There has to be a savings...

It's about time this changed... lets just wait and see... [pipe]

It already has changed. The solar magnetic activity cycle is 11 years. 22 I suppose if you consider the flipping of magnetic poles.

But what’s it got to do with air travel?

Better get rid of stadium sports, too.

Personally, I think we should just pack as many people as possible into Canada with their abundance of hydroelectric power.

brim... Major sports events may cause a lot of added air travel... this may have to change in the future.

@TBE ...

"we should just pack as many people as possible into Canada" ...

eff off !! you and your guns !! (smile)

if we're going to pack people anywhere it should be Iceland (with their geothermal).

another day in paradise, or is paradise one day closer ?

Or into the Sun. There's enough solar there until the end of our existence if we all go.

SuperSalad, we can replicate that "solar energy" here on earth. Just, uh, hard to harness it :)

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

Don’t worry, dik. That obviously is Death Valley. Not relevant to most of us.

Sorry Hokie... I missed a step... When Tug mentioned Calif hit that temp, I knew it was in Death Valley and just posted him how they are setting records nearly on a yearly basis... that will likely continue. I never thought to reference it, but the temperatures were recorded at a certain location in Death Valley, and I should have recorded the location.
