I took Jefka's post to be pointing out that it may come across as a negative, perhaps perceived as questionable judgment, for someone to resign from a job with no other immediate opportunities.

Or something like that.

What is Engineering anyway: faq1088-1484

Before making any major career decision you need to have a strategy that you believe will get you to where you need to be. Spontaneity is great, and has it's place as a survival mechanism to help you out of a rut, especially if there are very heavy emotional issues involved. If this was the case, then you probably had no choice but to leave, but now, because of the economic climate, you have to work your ass off to get back on top.

In a bad economy, one of the best investments you can make is education. Consider making yourself more employable by taking up a course or exploring alternate career options, even if it is just to tide you over till you get where you need/want to be with your Engineering career.

KENAT, I agree, but I hope that the OP had some sort of real reason for resigning, if not, he should probably start to evaluate if this is the line of work he should be in - or switch to the public sector.

While I have had many times that I would have loved to have walked out, possibly with so much commotion that everybody knew what was happening, I have not. I have found it better to relax and look for the right opportunity. If I ever did resign (calmly of course) without future employment lined up, I would be sure it was based on a rational decision that I could explain to someone else.

Not everyone thinks through issues good enough though.
