A gigawatt is a fair bit. Enough to provide power to about 1 million homes as long as they don't all boil the kettle at the same time.

But it isn't just the people it killed. It made these people and animals sick from the radiation that came from the Sun - the stuff that's usually blocked by the atmosphere - and so there have been still births and cancers and mutations.

My favourite paragraph from that page. I just love it when conspiracy theorists start using the word "radiation" like this.
