Dear all,

I searched several places and did not find nozzle has to be integrally reinforced nor radiagraphable design for category D joint per code for lethal service. Only full penetration weld is needed. Do I miss something ?

jtseng123, I don't think so, but I would prefer integral reinforcement of nozzles to permit future inspection.

jtseng123,

You are correct in saying that only full penetration weld is required by the Code. Integral reinforcement or radiographable nozzles (i.e. lip type or Q-type nozzles) are just preferences.

The following ASME interpretations indicate that nozzles with separate reinforcement plates are allowed.

Interpretation: VIII-1-98-23
Subject: Section VIII, Division 1 (1995 Edition, 1996 Addenda); Fig. UW-16.1
Date Issued: March 18, 1998
File: BC97-522
Question: May the attachment details shown in Fig. UW-16.1 sketch (a) or (c) be used on a vessel intended for use in lethal service?
Reply: Yes.

Interpretation: VIII-1-98-113
Subject: Section VIII, Division 1 (1998 Edition, 1999 Addenda); UW-2(a)(1)(d)
Date Issued: March 22, 2000
File: BC00-100
Question (1): May reinforced pads attached with fillet welds as shown in Fig. UW-16.1 sketches (a-2) or (h) of Section VIII, Division 1, be used on vessels designed for lethal service per UW-2(a)(1)(d)?
Reply (1): Yes.
