Footing Dowel Design - Transfer of Moment/Tension

Hi,

A moment which induces tension is needed to be transferred to my footing. How do I determine the required dowel area to transfer this moment/tension?

OP, have you designed the reinforcement in the column that will transfer the forces to the footing? If so, then you know how to determine the required dowel area! Make sure to take care in detailing that connection, looking for details such as maximum steel in the column and development. Assuming your firm has typical details for footings, review those and that should give you a hint for what this would look like.

Turn the thing upside down in your head and you'll see that it's the same situation as the connection between a roof slab and column. As such, you need to tend to many of the same issues:

1) Eccentric punching shear in the the footing.

2) Rebar detailing that is able to redirect tension around the corner of the joint.

3) Quite possibly, top steel in your footing in addition to bottom steel.

Quite often one is pressured to allow the footing dowels to be turned outwards rather than inwards for constructability reasons. That is quite often allowed despite being a bit dubious technically.
