Hi All,

What are your thoughts about lowering the basement slab so that the middle height of the 3" slab is flush with the underside of the footing as per the below sketch. The client wants to add a few inches in height to the basement but does not want to underpin the footings. I've never seen this done although the contractor says he's seen it done in other jobs. Right now the slab is sitting on top of the footing. The slab is in poor condition now so needs to be rebuilt in any case that's why they are considering this option.

Your primary concern is lateral restraint at the bottom of the wall, correct? My gut feel is that most basement walls do not wind up pushing on SOG's that way but it sure is a "nice to have".

In more extreme situations, I've cast a localized "bench" into the slab against the wall. Your owner may well object to that of course.
