Less explodey than lithium batteries, cheaper, more common resources used, longer life. OK not great for mobile applications, but if we are serious about getting rid of fossil fuels and are scared of nuclear (unnecessarily on any rational grounds then we are going to need gigantic piles of storage batteries.

On the other hand 100 MWh per year is not so much niche as invisible, say 10000 houses worth. Still it is a start.

Need to fix the title, Greg. It is Zinc-Ion.

I didn't know we could do that, thanks.

I couldn't work out the 100MWh bit. Is that the production capacity per year of the batteries?

Agree it doesn't sound like a lot.

Also it's the 2-10 hours of storage which limits the usage to short term storage from e.g. Solar or tidal to even out the supply over a longer period.

But could be interesting for that purpose.

In Australia at least we have a 16 hour problem, basically overnight on windless weeks, roughly 32 GWh for WA, and 250 GWh for the east coast. That is separate to our more general long term storage problems. Yes I think they meant 100 MWh of production per year.
