Hi,

While I calculate the max shear stress at the base of a pole,
Do I have to combine the direct shear and torsional shear or they are never occurs together??

I am not sure, but I think, the torsional shear is circling shear force and the direct shear is against one side and add on the other side. It looks like direct shear effect is zero with torsional shear. Am I right?

Please help. confusing.

Direct Shear,
I you have direct shear of a closed section like a circle, the total area is in the shear stress.
If you have a pole (cantiliver) and all the forces act parallel to ground and in one direction the bigest shear is at the base

Torsion Shear,
You are right about the shear stress, it's act around the section (if we are talking about a closed section)
The max point of torsion shear is upon your acting forces.
For example if you have only one force at the end of the pole and this is the only force that give torsion to the pole, the torsion is constant form the base up to the point where the force is.
If you have a linear distributed force that give you torsion the shear is goin to vary (just like the shear)

Interaction.
In the interaction is going to be a point where the direct shear stress and the torsion shear stress are going to be parallel and the same direction, if you reason in this like vectors have to be added.
