hi rb1957! The previous posts mentioned inertia relief and modal. Those were the examples. And they are commonly used. I am not sure what we are debating. Either way, my point was to ascertain from the OP what they are trying to accomplish. If they are trying to perform an inertia relief...
Hi rb1957! The examples have already been listed in the previous posts. And those kinds of models are quite common are they not?

It would be helpful if you specified what kind of analysis you intend to do without constraints and the purpose of such an analysis. As others have stated, it is common to use unconstrained models in certain cases.

Hi rb1957. We agree that element options are irrelevant for nodal plots. That is what I am getting at.
If you select Elemental Contour but you turn the Corner Data ON, you really get a Nodal Plot. So it follows that the ECD options should not be available to you ... but they are.
I do...
Hi rb1957. Unfortunately, the internet is making this difficult to explain. It seems that I am not effectively communicating what my issue is. I am not talking about the Data Conversion options that offer Max, Min, and Average.
I am talking about Element Contour Discontinuity (ECD)...
Hi rb1957. I understand that the Data Conversion field handler the "what should I do with the multiple values I have at the nodes ?" portion of things. I guess my main point is this: When you have a nodal plot, the Element Contour Discontinuities field is unavailable. But I have shown in my...
Hi All - I have been researching this one for a while. I have read the Femap help and read many posts on the subject. I am almost there, but need a little more help.
There are many options under the 'Select Contour Options' menu that seem contradictory to me. My experiments lead me to the...
I was able to do this using embed face, but I cannot figure out how to put different mesh sizes on the different solids and still have it map. I should be able to put a fine mesh size on the 3 small solids and a coarse mesh on the larger solid and have it match up only where necessary (i.e. at...
One of the advantages of using the Curves - from Surfaces method to split faces is that you can select many faces and curves at the same time and it will only split faces that it makes sense to (i.e. faces that have a corresponding curve that when projected normal to face will intersect that...
Hi rb1957 - It looks like I made the example too simplified. Automatic add works for this simple case. Assume you have two solids s1 & s2 each in their own groups g1 & g2. Then say you split both surfaces using technique above. I would want only the child surfaces of s1 to end up in g1 and...
I have the structure in the image (FEM attached).
I am trying to use the Mesh > Geometry > Hex Mesh on Solids...
I want to know the correct way to set up for this. This is what I have tried and it fails. I know I can use other mesh methods, but I want to use this method. This is a much...
If I have a surface in a group and I then use the splitting function Geometry > Curve - From Surface to split the surface into two smaller surfaces, the group will lose one of the smaller surfaces. Is there any way to have Femap automatically add all of the subsurfaces...
I use (and love) UltraEdit for this purpose. Not free, but fairly inexpensive. Free trial for 30 days is available. I like the Nastran syntax highlighting.

tomstress - I also use the Femap/MD Nastran configuration. It is rumored that Femap 11.2 will handle glued contact for us correctly now, but I have not confirmed.

Hi Rob - wow! I missed the forest for the trees. I have not tried it (since my laptop is not with me) but I have to assume that this will work since there are options to save AND load layouts from here.
Thanks for your help.

I have just installed Femap on a laptop to work from home. I also have an installation on my desktop machine that I have heavily customized with command buttons and keyboard shortcuts. Is there a way to make my laptop installation look the same by copying over certain files...
I guess I don't fully understand how to use this command. When I select solid elements and assign a plate property, it then asks me to "Select Nodes to Limit Free Edges or Faces" .... I don't really know what it wants? I was hoping that this method could pick out the free faces automatically...
Hi Blas - This looks like it is exactly what I am looking for. I will test it tomorrow at work. Thank you!
