I have worked with PIC micros and I find them pretty easy. But I have no experience with the other standard mfgs. Why do call the PIC architecture hideous? Is Atmel or another better?

Hi Dancey, Comcokid, and IRstuff,
Thanks to you all for the input.
IRstuff, you prompted me to begin a number of translation-challenging communications with our offshore supplier that solved the immediate problem.
In addition to that, Comcokid and Dancey, your insight also proved valuable in...
How about an IR sensor? About a buck at Mouser:
512-QRE1114
Add battery, resistor, and DMM and you've got it. Cheaper than a camera. The part number above also has an IR diode, so if you need to check the sensor, you can hook up the IR diode to check that the sensor is working.

Hi Eng-Tipsors,
This is my first question. I did a few searches that came up empty, so please forgive me if this is redundant.
I need to get RoHS compliant PCBs. My supplier has a "halogen-free" option that costs a little more, and is not available for all my boards.
RoHS bans Polybrominated...
I'm not familiar w/TGs, but how much is too much current?
Using an RC LPF of 1kohm and .47uF, 50Hz is unattenuated, and 1100Hz is down almost 12dB, giving about 15Vp-p.
Current through R at 50Hz would be 3mA, and at 1100Hz 45mA. Would that be too much for the tach, or too little for the optos...
For guitar pickups the L is large, making the RLC peak in the audio band. With the volume control at maximum you get this, right ?(I hope the ASCII works when it is small)

Hi there. This is my first post. Hope it doesn't annoy anyone.
Sound perception is psycho-acoustic, and involves WSP (wetware signal processing - human). So you need to take into account the response of the receiver (ear) and WSP.
From pugap's description, which is rather vague, I gather this...
