Angle connection to the side of concrete pier

Hi, I'm gonna explain how I'd get this to work.... Say, the unfactored (characteristic) point load on angle section, shearing the bolts is 10kN. Based on RAWL's table given in the link below (download the last PDF-Bonded Anchors, page 148) or you can use Hilti; use two M12 bolts with embedment...

    Waffle Slab Design Example

The best book to refer to is 'Reinforced Concrete Design to Eurocode' by Bill Mosley. This is a must have book for structural engineers. It has got detailed worked example of all cocncete elements, including ribbed and waffle slabs. This gives you complete waffle slab design with rebar detailing...

How to Import DXF Gridlines into Masterseries?

Thanks but sorry, there isnt any forum for this software. I've contacted the software provider. Its gonna be just a matter of waiting I guess.....

    Point Load on Slabs

Hi, Based on BS EN code, you can take plant live load of 7.5 kN/m2 onto the slab and design it. Taking the steel area provided, take machine point load from its leg that acting on the slab, do a punching shear check. Cheers

How to Import DXF Gridlines into Masterseries?

Hi, Thanks for the advice. I actually had posted this topic in structural engineering forum but no one had replied for long time. Then the moderator advised to moved into this one saying this is the approporiat forum for this topic. I've dropped them an email. Just waiting for their response...

    Torsion transfer to pile

Hi, Convert the torsion (Mtorque) into horizontal force, then apply to the pile. If you already have a Hforce acting on the pile, add this up to that. Cheers

    Foundations on Silt

Hi, Based on code BS 8004:1986, silt soil has a NIL bearing capacity and yes, it triggers 'heave' warning!

    Additional Rebar

Hi, You would need to provide additional bars around the existing column (with links) and reconcrete it to strengthen it. Instead of 2, 16 dia bars, provide 3 12dia bar on each face (12 in total). This is an overkill but no other options! You would also need to check existing footing capacity...

How to Import DXF Gridlines into Masterseries?

Just wondering if anyone, whos familiar with Masterseries software can help me out with importing architects DXFed AutoCAD gridlines into Masterseries? I want to place columns in between walls, where the both X and Y grids are intersecting. For this I need to DXF only the gridlines and then...

    rc beam design (Eurocode)

Hi I think your beam depth is inadequate. Based on Basic Span/Depth Ratio Table, for simply supported beam, with As/bd>1.5%, the ratio is 14. Span/14 + cover = beam depth => 16300/14 = 1164 + 30 cover = 1194. Use 1200mm deep beam When it comes to deflection, 'I' governs it. I - moment of...

How to Support Concrete Beam with an I-Beam?

Hi Mike! Thanks for your comments :) You're right. I can't add the I-beam below for head clearance reason. My sketch just illustrates my porposal. Edge beams having heavy reinforcement, 6-T16 at the bottom and 3-T16 (Fy 460 N/mm^2) at top with 200 width and 400 depth for 4m (13ft) span...

What Type of Foundation for Coastal Building (Seaside)?

Hi dick-concretemasonry No there aren't any requirement in particular. 200m away from the beach, 1500mm below we find 500mm thick rock layer. The soil type near the beach is 'dense silty sand'. Very hard soil. Only excavators can do excavation!

What Type of Foundation for Coastal Building (Seaside)?

Ron...thanks for your advice. Yes, we're to get a geotechnical engineer for this project but as a design engineer. End of the day I need to increase my knowledge on all aspects of structural engineering. So I just want to know the type of foundation used for coastal buildings.. :)

How to Support Concrete Beam with an I-Beam?

Hello, I have to design an extention for an existing structure. There are 3 columns with 2m centre-to-centre span. These coulmns support 200 x 400 beam, which supports another 200 x 300 secondary beam (supporting slabs). Contractor wants to knock down the middle column and keep the beams as...

What Type of Foundation for Coastal Building (Seaside)?

Hi, I have to design a villa, 3-storey with 12m x 10m dimension, near the sea, in an Arabian Gulf country. I just want to know what type of foundation is suitable and what other measures, concerns etc should be taken for this type of residential building foundation design. I don't think pad...

How to design long span slab with big opening?

I appreciate all of your comments on this topic. Thanks a trillion! Being a learning engineer, I've learnt alot of useful and important info and design approches. Nothing impossible, until we try it eh? We tried to design a long span slab with opening, without having beams but failed! We didn't...

How to design long span slab with big opening?

Thanking everyone for the replies :) Well we can't change the architect. It'e the client is well loaded ( owns 3 Bentleys), whos insisting him net to let the engineer give downstand beams lolz!I like it because it forces me to learn new/difficult designs. I'm talking about 200mm reinforced slab...
