    Cutting Simulation-Stresses on Tool

Your comment made me rethink it and I concluded the following: It works best if I apply the above mentioned BC at the top edge and the far right face of the tool since this way more faces of the tool are constrained without affecting the faces that participate in contact. Thanks for the help!

    Cutting Simulation-Stresses on Tool

You are right! That did the trick! However I had to implement the Velocity BC on the far right side of the tool and tick the other 2 boxes for V2 and VR3 else the tool will spin or go upwards towards the y-direction.

    Cutting Simulation-Stresses on Tool

I have 2 boundary conditions. One(ENCASTRE) is applied to the lowest face of the workpiece. The second is a Velocity/Angular Velocity boundary condition and is applied to the whole tool instance. In this condition velocity through the y-axis is 0 and velocity through the x-axis is given a value...

    Cutting Simulation-Stresses on Tool

Hello and thank you for your answer! The tool is deformable as well as the workpiece. The material parameters for both the workpiece and the tool are correct- I did the same simulation while the tool was a rigid body and the stresses on the workpiece were the same as now (deformable tool). Also...

    Cutting Simulation-Stresses on Tool

Hello community, I am trying to calculate the stresses during a cutting sequence. However I can not see the stresses on the tool, only on the workpiece What I mean is as follows: What I mean to accomplish is to show the stress contours on the tool as well as the workpiece. Both the tool and...

Chip self contact in 2D orthogonal cutting

Hello community, I tried a new approach to the problem. In this model, my workpiece is a combination of 2 parts (workpiece-chip) bound together by a tie constraint. Moreover, a new wire based part is created and placed on top of the chip via a tie constraint. Below you can see the assembly...

    FE Machining in Abaqus

Hello community, I have to simulate a model of 2D orthogonal cutting in Abaqus/Explicit. I have a major problem in defining the correct interaction so that the chip interacts with itself when it curves. The result I get is something like this: Does anyone know of a way to stop the chip...

Chip self contact in 2D orthogonal cutting

The self contact of the faces you mention does the trick for the given step time. But if I change the velocity BC and give a higher value and the curl goes further this happens: That is proof that the simulation still needs something. If you or somebody else has any more ideas as to how I can...

Chip self contact in 2D orthogonal cutting

Thank you very much for your effort! I had that strip of metal on my model as well...in order to fix it there needs to be a more dense mesh below the chip area. My material parameters are taken from a material library. What kind of elements and meshing technique did you use?

Chip self contact in 2D orthogonal cutting

Thank you for your answer. What I am trying to do is as follows: In order to simulate a correct 2D orthogonal cutting process I need to create a contact between these surfaces : and this: which are on the same body. I have implemented a self contact algorithm about the first surface, but then...

Chip self contact in 2D orthogonal cutting

I still have not come up with any solutions. Anyone has any ideas about how I can model it correctly?

Chip self contact in 2D orthogonal cutting

Hello and thank you for your answer. The general contact algorithm does not work at all for a 2D simulation. The contact algorithm I use for this problem is a surface-to-surface contact with the master surface defined as the faces of the tool that come in contact with the workpiece and a slave...

Chip self contact in 2D orthogonal cutting

Hello community, I have the following simulation problem. I an trying to simulate a case of 2D orthogonal cutting. The chip is normally created but when it curls up there is no interaction between the surfaces. I have tried to use the self contact on the outermost surface of the workpiece but...

Damage Evolution definition in 2D Orthogonal Cutting

Hello community, could someone enlighten me regarding the equivalent plastic displacement parameter input? My material is defined with the Johnson-Cook model but I cannot seem to find an accurate way of calculating the equivalent plastic displacement. The problem I am trying to simulate is a...

2D Orthogonal Cutting - Contact Definition

Hello community, I am trying to simulate a simple 2D example of orthogonal cutting as shown in the pic below: However, the problem I face is that of the interaction definition. It is a 2D simulation, so I cannot use the general contact algorithm. So I use the surface-to-surface algorithm...

Spatially varying displacement boundary condition-Analytical field

I created a table with 100 time points for each displacement axis along with a smooth step amplitude and I get the error : 'The ratio of deformation speed to wave speed exceeds 1.0000 in at least one element' If I use less points the job is working but not at the required curve precision. My...

Spatially varying displacement boundary condition-Analytical field

I am aware of the smooth step amplitude but in the manual it clearly states that the smooth step definition cannot be used to interpolate smoothly between a set of data points. Also I was looking for a way to avoid using subroutines but it seems it is unavoidable. Thank you very much for all...

Spatially varying displacement boundary condition-Analytical field

If I use two different amplitudes to describe the displacement in the two axis, as you have advised, I virtually give many (as much as the lines of the amplitudes) linear displacements along the two axis. My goal is however, to insert to the program a displacement boundary condition that is not...

Spatially varying displacement boundary condition-Analytical field

Thank you very much for your answer. Problem is that this time I can not simulate the curve via many lines because my tool is a lot smaller than the previous one and I also need the tool to be vertical to the curve at the same time. This is why I need a new method to apply my spatially varying...

Spatially varying displacement boundary condition-Analytical field

Hello community, I have the following simulation problem. I want to simulate the motion of a rigid body along another deformable body. The rigid body moves along a curve that is given by a function. I need a way to implement this curve to Abaqus. I insert the function via the analytical field...
