ASME Section VIII Div. 2 - Internal Piping

Dear experts, I am working on a spherical pressure vessel constructed to ASME VIII Div. 2. Min. Design metal temp. is -45°C. There are several nozzles at the top of the vessel. One of them is a nozzle for a level transmitter with a stilling well that goes into the vessel. My question is: do the...

    ASME IX PWHT Cycles

Good afternoon. Reference: ASME Section IX and API 650 Welding Process: SMAW My client required the PQR to be qualified with a minimum of 3 PWHT cycles. The material to be welded is 25 mm thick and the PWHT holding is 1 hour. So I PWHT the PQR coupon for 6 hours in one heat. That is, heating...

    API 650 Two-Side Welding

Dear experts, Is it a API 650 requirement that the second side of a double-side welded joint needs to be back-chipped at least one-third of the joint thickness? I cannot find this requirement in the API 650 12th edition. Need advice. Thanks

    API 650 Shell Vertical

Dear experts, API 650 storage tanks My welding process is FCAW-G. On the shell vertical seams, I am considering a single-vee joint, single side welding with ceramic backing. Another option is single-vee, double side welding, which means I need to backgouge the second side. I need advice on...

    ASME Section IX QW-403.9

The design code is API 650 but this should not be relevant, right? My opinion is that the pqr will not be able to support the WPS because the maximum thickness qualified is 1.1 x 27 = 29.7 mm and the production plate is more than this. I am not sure and would like to get confirmation.

    ASME Section IX QW-403.9

Dear experts, I need some help with QW 403.9 requirement. I have attached a sketch of my PQR joint detail and production joint detail. My PQR is qualified on 27mm thickness plate welded with a single pass EGW. The production weld is a double vee joint to be welded with a single pass EGW on side...

    Welding Lap Joints

Thanks for your response. I am also considering SAW/FCAW combo. Maybe weld the 1st pass with SAW with a 6mm vertical leg length and top it off with FCAW. Thanks.

    Welding Lap Joints

Dear experts, I am working on a storage tank and the project spec. calls for minimum 2 passes welding on the bottom lap joints. Bottom plates is 8mm thick. I am considering using SAW with auto downflat tractor but not sure if it is problem trying put 2 passes in a 8mm lap joint. Please advise...

API 650 Material Grouping Table 4.4a

In Table 4.4a, A36M is grouped under I and II. Note 3 for Group I A36M says "Thickness ≤ 20 mm." Note 5 for Group II A36M says "...... Thicknesses ≤ 20 mm shall have a manganese content of 0.80 % to 1.20 % by heat analysis. My question is; does the requirement in note 5 applies to note 3 if my...

    ASME BPVC.I-2017: PW-40.3

I found a weld defect on P-No. 1 material after it has been PWHT'ed. I intend to repair the weld followed by another cycle PWHT. NDE will be same as original weld. Question: Does the requirement of section PW-40.3, PW-40.3.1-9 applies if I were to PWHT the repaired weld? My understanding of...

    Incoloy 800H (UNS 8810) PWHT

Thanks meting and welstan. Went back to look into the client spec. again and they cited stabilize annealing as the reason for the heat treating. If this is the case, I would think a faster cooling is more beneficial. Regards.

    Incoloy 800H (UNS 8810) PWHT

Hi, I fabricated 800H pipe welded with Inco 82 filler, performed stabilising annealing at 985 deg C for 3 hours. Specified code is B31.3 and the service temperature is 850 deg C. Client specifies a maximum cooling rate of 150 deg C/hr but we exceed this cooling rate. Actual cooling rate is 180...

    Pipe Size

I am looking for a clear definition of "Heavy Wall". Can I say that if the wall thickness is greater than schedule STD for that size, will be considered heavy-wall. Is there a formula which takes diameter and wall thickness into account to determined if a pipe is considered heavy wall. Thanks.
