Why do people give up engineering?

As one that left Engineering for Management, my personal reason was the lack of respect shown Engineering in the US. If you want respect at least here, you had better be a Ball Player, a CEO, heck, a stinking ACCOUNTANT. I figured if I was going anywhere, I might as well make it pay. So, when...

    Detroit 4-53 diesel engine injectors

Autotech, how will you know that the Injector you pull from the blown engine is not the reason the engine blew? Diesels are funny animals, do it right.

The future of the combustion engine-OP ED

Anyone want one of those EV's here where the temperature drops below 0? Kind of like those who think Mass Transit is the answer......... Will work splendidly for part of the country, but what about the rest of us?

    Right/Left Wound Beehive Spring Mystery.

Pat, I am, as well as "Pink" Rods.......

    Wiped Rod Bearings

Guess I am lost, here they are brand new from Onan for $68.50 each US. Hardly seems worth the mess trying to come up with something else. http://onanparts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_4&products_id=10

tyre coefficient of friction vs speed

I would say each vehicle would have a different answer based upon speed and downforce, assuming ABS, some of that would be negated. I do know this, driving 91-96 Chevrolet Caprices for the past 13 years, at higher speeds the rear is so light that I would be careful with emergency braking.

    Gearing for gas milage

I think you are talking about a guy I know. If it is the same truck, it is a mid 90's 12 valve and he has done everything possible to reduce drag, including a huge chin spoiler. You might check out this: http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/33-mpg-t206843.html?highlight=crabbelle Doubt you...

    Ratio issues

Keith, any mom-n-pop machine shop will have Dumore keyway broaches. That would have solved your keyway dilemma. If not, they are reasonably cheap to purchase and only require a small press to use. It is possible you will still lose it with the TIG weld...

Flywheel Design for a Diesel Engine

The website says every engine in development utilizes a 4.625" diameter piston, which would be 504". Which is it, 4.5 or 4.625? Also, would you consider running one in an on the road configuration? There would be a pretty good market for the 3 or 4 cylinder in retrofit, depending on the cost.

    Diesel Injector Driver (CRD)

Not sure if they can help you, but the people who started Megasquirt injection have always answered any questions I have had. http://www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.html It is worth a shot.

    Automotive Failure Analysis

Been a while since I worked on a failure, but I have to go along with Metalguy. From the photos, it appears as if the first shown has multiple initiations, and is 180 out from the second photo. We had a rash of shaft failures immediately above a spline very similar to your photo, turned out to...

    Chrysler Engineering reputation

I have to say I am probably still alive because of Chrysler engineers. My 1967 GTX folded at exactly the points the engineers intended when it hit that tree at 50. Folded up even the trunk floor, took enough of the energy away so I only ended up with a twisted spine and a crushed cheekbone. I...

    Wind Turbines

BigInch, those are the same Turbines we have here in Central Illinois. You are right, they are just way too loud, you can barely hear yourself think. Then a Cricket chirps and you about jump out of your shoes. There may well be a problem with the grid bouncing, but to say they have a noise...

    Head Gasket

Rod, there are some of us pushing enough boost to require the "antique O-rings". Even Cometics has not been able to contain excessive boost...... ;-)

    Synthetic Gasoline is coming???

Hmm, Glycerine, makes for a wonderful driveway cleaner, and you should see what the stuff can do when reacted with Nitruc acid and dewatered with Sulphuric.

ASTM A193 GR B7 bolts keep breaking

What radius do you have at the root of the thread? I assume you are single pointing this thread? Could the break be induced by a sharp V?

    how to find intake leak

Use a hand held propane torch, valve open, not lit obviously. With the engine running, slowly pass the torch over any suspected areas. Usually, the additional fuel will change the idle RPMs enough to find the source area.

    Bio-fuels .... good or bad?

Actually, we need to plant trees........ Diesel trees that is. Too bad the only place they could currently survive ( at least in the US ) is parts of Florida. But the Amazon could easily become the next big oil producing area....... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copaifera_langsdorfii

    Bio-fuels .... good or bad?

Rod, currently the yield is around 2.8 Gal/ Bushel of Corn. Corn is not the answer, but it is a stepping stone.
