Are you trying to hide the components in the model or in there respective drawing views. If in the model it will update in all views.
In the drawing, expand/open one of the views. Right click the component you wish to hide and a menu should appear with the hide option.
Ask your VAR if they have any pre test CSWP training. Most Var's do for a fee. This should give you an idea of what to expect. Also there are sample questions and a study outline on the Solidworks website.
I assume your VAR will bend about the training manuals if they are convinced you intend...
We are in the same boat as Shaggy except our pdm is smarteam. IT must upgrade any custom programing before moving forward. Also there is the dreaded fear of bugs with the initial release.
Just upgraded to 2004 last fall and in IT's infinate wisdom loaded the original release (no service packs)...
Just trying to help. Have had similar issues and the fix I proposed works as far as I can tell. The tree does not expand when mates are applied. However I am on 2004 if that makes any difference.
Recently loaded SW Office 2004. Since the install I have been unable to add items to the custom properties list. Before the install I had Length, Width and Thickness fields specifically needed for our BOM. Now the list comes up blank and only shows the default items if the edit list box and ok...

Experimenting with some drawing settings yesterday. Now I am no longer able to snap a line to the mid point of a part in a drawing. If this is any help a dialog box pops up which reads,
