    'Design' versus '_design_'?

There is also the minor issue of "plan-stamping" being illegal. The PE who signs off on it without doing the design faces all sorts of nasty punishment.

Big Bang Theory Show - Impact on Science/Engineering

I'm a big fan. Between the robot hand and Sheldon and Amy playing doctor - Star Trek Style - I keep swallowing my gum!

Can I end up where I'd like to, given what I'm doing now

Do all the grunt work you can. That will serve you better when you tackle the PE. Keep your head down pounding out the work and your 6 months will turn to 6 years before you notice. I personally won't assign projects to someone who hasn't done the work themselves - the more the better.

Getting Hired by an Engineering Firm?

FYI - I've been seeing a lot of headhunters advertising for the Greenville area.

    Less wear resistant steels

Great! I will look into this. We did look at nitriding these parts in the past, but didn't pursue it. I will have to track down someone and ask why. Thanks.

    Less wear resistant steels

We make machines that strap large objects with steel wires. The wire is zinc coated. The wire slides over some of our machine parts and snaps across them as the wire gets pulled tight. Originally the parts were made from 1020 and hard-chrome plated. Once the wire wore through the plating, the...

Developing and Working with other Engineers

I will disagree with the majority. Take it and run with it. The opportunity is largely what you make of it. Which is not to say it won't hurt. A lot.

Generation Conflict - Changing The Wheel

Ask if you can set up a separate R&D lab. The old geezers might be remarkably receptive to the idea. Any new ideas can be tested and chewed up without threatening any empires, which is most likely what you are really running into. If you really do have improvements to be made, the nay-sayers...

    Kids these days...

As one on the leading edge of Generation-X, I've been pushing Baby Boomers to get out of my way my entire career. As long as they are there it is hard to advance. I still hold out hope for the kids entering college. As a whole they are pretty much house-broken and some even wash. After a few...

    Kids these days...

There's hope. My daughter and her friends graduated from high school last year. There are some smart, hard working courteous kids in that group.

What does a PE stamp get you?

It sounded to me like they paid a second engineer in state to stamp the plans, which he didn't prepare. If I was in a bad mood I might light him up with his state board.

    Book recommendations for Mechanical Engineering

I did not know that about Mischke's edition. I got the author from a co-worker's book - mine's at home - and he had that one.

    Book recommendations for Mechanical Engineering

Those 3 are all excellent, and I would include Mechanical Engineering Design by Shigley and Mischke.

    Steam Engineer License

Get the PE when you can. It doesn't make you a better engineer, but it does open some some interesting doors. It's just easier to do it sonner rather than later.

I'm not in it for the money...I'm not in it for the money...

I was in that situation once - then led a rebellion to rectify the situation! I doubt you have that option in government, but in private industry anything can happen.

How common is 4-10 schedule in US?

At a previous job, we worked 4-10s. I took Wednesday off. That solved the Friday coverage problem. Then we got busy and went to 6-10s, but that is a completely different problem.

My plan to "jumpstart" my career

I passed up the opportunity Ornerynorsk suggested and have regretted it ever since. 20-20 hindsight!

$25/hr no overtime pay for PE with 9 yrs exp

It works better than most people think. I've had employers reject my counter-offer, then accept it a month later. I maintain that what you get paid has little to do with what you are worth, and a great deal to do with how bold you are. It works especially well during recessions...

$25/hr no overtime pay for PE with 9 yrs exp

Purdue87 Sorry I haven't followed this thread for awhile. "PJones, something doesn't add up... a PE with 9 yrs experience is worth (only) $75k/yr but the general consensus is that the same PE consulting for himself is worth a minimum of roughly $75/hr. ??? why is he not starting his own...

$25/hr no overtime pay for PE with 9 yrs exp

Counter-offer to $75k. You don't get what you don't ask for. Sometimes you don't get what you do ask for. Fortune favors the bold.
